In the last few weeks we have been busy working with medical teams. Karen has been working in the pharmacy and the “dossier” office (where the medical records are kept). Scott has been helping lead and guide the teams, gathering supplies, and help where needed. Two of the most interesting cases involved a young baby (named Melissa) who was severely burned on her face. The mother used the local folk treatment of rubbing charcoal on the baby’s face. When the baby was brought in she look pretty bad, but the team was able to treat her and she is making a wonderful recovery. The other case involved a teenager who had severe type one diabetes, some how he walked a long way up the mountain to the clinic, but once there he was very near death. He desperately needed to go to a hospital. One of the scariest moments came when the team had run out of medicine to give the boy, they started praying and right then Karen discovered one last bag of the medicine! Scott helped to track down a truck and get him down the mountain to the nearest hospital. Later the team took up a collection to pay for the boy’s treatment. All together the team saw several hundred patients each day.
A few days after that team left, three nurses from Minnesota came and did a one day clinic. This time we were left completely in charge of the group. Karen worked the pharmacy while Scott split his time between helping the nurses and helping Karen. –Let me just add a plug here, if any of you know ANYTHING about medicine or pharmaceutical things PLEASE come! There is such a great need, if you can count pills, make even minor diagnoses or fill out a chart we would love to have you come! We are learning more and more but there is a great need.
